When a buildup of fluid appears in your tissues, it results in puffiness or swelling of the body, often in the ankles, feet, or legs.
Causes
There are many causes of edema, but it should be noted that it can be a sign of heart failure or other problems. It might be proof that you heart is not putting enough effort in to pumping blood out of your swollen tissues. If you notice persistent swelling, call your healthcare provider, as the only treatment for edema is treating the condition causing the swelling itself.
Keep the swelling down
Wear support stocking, avoid standing for extended periods of time, elevate your legs when in bed, and reduce your salt consumption. You may also be prescribed a diuretic, or water pill, to aid your body in eliminating the extra fluids.
