Electrophysiology studies, performed in the cardiac cath lab, are used to assess and diagnose abnormal heart rhythms and rates. One or more than one specialized EP catheters is introduced into the heart. While there, the catheter sends small electrical impulses to the heart.
Depending on how the heart responds to these electrical impulses, EP catheters can accurately assess the cause behind abnormalities in heart rhythms and the best treatment to reverse them. This is usually done before procedures like ablation or devices such as pacemakers or ICDs are utilized.
